Wine and it’s natural benefits…

The benefits of red wine have often been studied. Researchers have discovered that even though the French eat a diet high in saturated fats (with butter, croissants, creamy sauces, cheese, and other fatty foods), statistically they have a significantly lower incidence of deaths from heart disease. Researchers have concluded that the underlying factor in all of this was the French people’s regular consumption of wine.

It isn’t just wine in general, but red wine specifically, that studies are now suggesting protect against heart disease. Studies suggest that drinking red wine may have blood-thinning and anti-clotting properties that help to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in middle-age people. It may also help prevent additional heart attacks after already suffering from one. Other studies have indicated that red wine can help raise HDL (or good cholesterol) in the blood stream, which acts as a protector for the heart and can help prevent artery damage by lowering blood levels of LDL (or bad cholesterol); it may even prevent LDL from forming.

A growing body of scientific research shows that wine is not just good for your heart but also offers health protection in other ways as well. The phytonutrients found in red wine offer a significant boost of antioxidant protection, which has the potential to help prevent not only heart disease, but various forms of cancer (such as colon cancer) by inhibiting tumor development. Other studies have found that these phytonutrients may be helpful in the treatment of neurological disease such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases and age-related memory loss. Research continues on the health links to red wine, but so far things are looking positive.

Always remember: Wine is not the cure-all. The health benefits of drinking moderate amounts of wine are enhanced when you eat a heart-healthy diet, exercise regularly, and eliminate harmful lifestyle habits, such as smoking.
